MIA alert

I'm not sure it still couts as MIA when you tell everyone you'll be MIA!

Anyhoo, today was my last day in work for a while, I am heading back to the Emerald Isle tomorrow. I am super excited about being back, not least because I get to go to a wedding (actually the wedding of one of the nicest girls you could ever hope to meet). Yay!

I'll maybe see you at some point over the week, and if not, well, I was probably hoping not to run into you anyway!

Things I love about the USA / North Carolina / the lake

I doubt I’ll get to 100 but here goes…

1. Free refills
2. Phone calls with Megann
3. I live 5 miles away from a ski slope, fair enough I’ve only been there once but it’s still pretty cool
4. Summer ends in November and arrives in April
5. Petrol is dead cheap, although nobody else thinks so!
6. With cable TV I am finally living the dream if having more than five TV channels (yes, even though it’s ten years old you still can’t get Channel 5 in Whitehead. You tell me it's crap, I tell you I want to see for myself!)
7. People instantly like me because I have an accent
8. You can get cinnamon everything
9. Even though I live hundreds of miles away from the sea, there is a lake
10. Some country music isn’t that bad as it turns outs
11. Old Navy
12. The undiscovered art of texting means I actually talk to my friends using my mobile
13. Wal Mart
14. When it rains I actually have to look for my umbrella
15. The Biltmore
16. Pillsbury Cake and Ice Cream
17. Things are cheaper here
18. Waiters and waitresses are trying to impress you and so nothing is too much trouble for them
19. It’s actually quite handy to be able to turn right on a red light
20. All you can eat buffets are common place
21. Mackinac Island
22. Peanut butter is a recognise food group
23. The Mall in DC
24. Y’all is a useful word
25. If I ever have a feel-fat-day, a trip to Wal Mart makes me feel like a supermodel
26. They look after me like a daughter
27. Target
28. A programme like 7th Heaven can actually get made and last for ten years
29. Macaroni and cheese
30. Camp Kinawind
31. I discovered my love of frozen grapes
32. Weather men/ladies actually call themselves meteorologists
33. It’s not one country, it’s a collection of 50+ countries
34. SUVs are nice to travel in
35. They like to confuse foreigners by never making the state capital the city you immediately associate with the state
36. The cross at the lake
37. When you ask for water in a restaurant they don’t immediately assume you mean bottled water
38. It feels like home
39. Names like Y’Lon, Brickhouse (still funny) and John De Ron Johnson don’t even raise an eyebrow here but I can laugh at them
40. I finally know more about football than boys, albeit on a technicality (football/soccer debate)
41. Metaphors don’t exist in country music, they sing it how it is
42. Downtown Greenville
43. Taco Bell
44. You can talk on your mobile and drive legally (and it's really not dangerous because of automatic gears)
45. Getting IDed at bars makes me feel young
46. I can play the ‘Ireland card’ when I don’t understand something, even if being from Ireland has nothing to do with it
47. They don’t believe in parallel parking. Hell, they don’t even trouble you with the effort of turning the wheel all the way because spaces go at slanted angles not perpendicular to the road
48. New York City
49. There’s all sort of nature I’ve never seen before. I’m no ornithologist as I’m about to prove – birds are all sorts of pretty colours, not just the brown kind we get at home.
50. With Extra Watermelon gum you can blow big bubbles

Getting to fifty wasn’t a bad effort! I should imagine they'll offer me citizenship any moment now.

Presentation is everything

Went to lunch with Maggie today and I got this salad (a salad Mum! See how I am growing up!)

Good presentation can sometimes be trying to hide shoddy work, but this salad was mmmn mmmn!

Thank goodness there weren't more Europeans

So this weekend I was once again in Greenville. I wasn’t planning on going down but Maggie was studying all weekend so there wasn’t going to be much entertainment at the lake.

We played crazy golf last night, which has reminded me to tell you about my 21st birthday. I was working in the summer camp where I know Megann from. I decided at the beginning of the summer that when my birthday came playing crazy golf would be fun. So that’s what we did. Yes, I am well aware that turning 21, especially in America, is a big deal, but it was my birthday so deal with it. Plus I had been able to drink at home for 3 years and didn’t ever take the opportunity.

If my memory serves correctly (and it does) there were 6 of playing. We divided along country lines with Megann, Amy and Heather against me, Stephen and Jamie, or USA versus Europe (technically it was just GB & NI, but USA v. Europe has golfing connotations too good to avoid).

So there we have it, USA on home soil against the Old World. It was good natured fun but there was a prize at stake too. We were playing for the Slurpee Cup. The losers had to buy the winners a Slurpee. I know, high stakes.

I honestly don’t remember that much about the game, who was winning, who was losing, who was good, who was crap, except for the last hole. The 18th hole was biggest and most impressive of the entire course. The green snaked around and down three levels and from where you started you couldn’t see the hole. But my moment of glory came and I got a hole in one! [In a film of this event it would be tied and everything would depend on my putt. I don’t think that’s how it happened but Hollywood would embellish it so.]

In the end, in part thanks to my hole in one, Europe triumphed and won the inaugural Slurpee Cup. In fact they are the holders as there has never been another.

Last night we paired up boy/girl. Sadly there was no moment of triumph for me. I sucked. Apparently my ball had a magnet which was repelled by the hole. I actually lost count of how many times the ball would circle around the hole and not go in. The pairings were random but it just so happened Jason, my partner, sucked too. We lost so badly! But that’s ok, although I did have to buy the winners an drink, the Slurpee Cup remains in the hands of Europe.

Anticipation

I’m really not sure what sort of picture I have painted of where I live. If you imagine some sort of small backwater where there aren’t many people my age then I think I have done it right. Having said that however, there are always people coming and going as the Lake is like a retreat centre for the United Methodist Church. Living here, you get a good indication of what it would be like to live in Castlewellan.

You know instantly when there is a group in from out of town. The big buses kind of give it away!

When I see the buses I always get a bit of nervous excitement for them. You know that feeling when you are going away on a weekend or retreat and you know that you are going to feel God’s presence.

I like that feeling.

A little bit of effort

Here’s a bit of an update on my life at present:

- I had a lovely day off on Friday, got lots done including getting my brake light replaced. I went to Advanced Autoparts where I met Scott, a Focus freak who was more than happy to fix it for me.

- I woke up on Saturday morning to Third Day ‘I’ve Always Loved You’ on the radio. It’s been in my head ever since. This was more than slightly annoying as I didn’t know the words. Therefore it became my latest purchase offof iTunes. Also got DC Talk ‘In the Light’ (am I the last Christian in the world to fully see the genius of Third Day and DC Talk?!) and Casting Crowns ‘Praise You in the Storm’. But what a big stinking Christian I am!

- I was in Greenville for Easter weekend. Had a good time, as always. But probably set the record for my latest ever wake up on Easter Sunday. Dawn services (or sunrise services as they are called here) aren’t that big a deal apparently, although having said that, there was one at the big cross at the lake, but obviously missed it.

- I spent Easter Sunday afternoon with the other orphans, Jose and Lindy. With no family around to be with, we went to the park and then had pina coladas in the sun.

- I largely wasted Monday’s day off. Didn’t do anything I’d planned except eat the crème eggs the parents had brought me.

- I have decided that I am perhaps the only person in the world who could care less about the Da Vinci Code coming out.

- I am delighted at the return of Chris Moyles and I loved Richard Ashcroft’s impromptu set yesterday. If you didn’t hear it, you should listen again.

- Temperatures are continuing to be in the twenties. But are now frequently accompanied by thunder and lightning. How continental.

- Work continues to be busy which is there has been a lack of effort with my blogs. Also why you are probably still waiting on an email from me. Ah sure I’ll be home soon enough, you can see me then! Which reminds me, I am taking bookings! Email me to schedule your appointment!

And finally
- I came down this morning to discover one of my glue traps had moved clear across the kitchen. It had been under the fridge and so was a bit dist covered and therefore not in prime stickiness mode. Hence the mouse/creature was able to get out. I purchased more glue traps at lunchtime. I shall await to see their effectiveness when I return home. Apparently they only come inside when it’s cold or rainy. I find this of little comfort. I am now back to any little noise or something touching my feet or ankles making me jump. I will be the only 25 year old to die of a stress induced heart attack if this continues.

Too late

I feel I have been neglecting my blog recently. Although I have managed to write something most days, I haven't put any real effort in to them. 'No really?!' I hear you cry! But it being 6.00pm and still nice and sunny outside I'm not going to start now with the effort. I'll do that tomorrow...or maybe the next day...well sometime soon.

Extra long showers

I broke the tap thing off my shower last night. Nice one Tina. There wasn’t anything left on it that I could get the water turned off and I didn’t have any kind of tool to help me turn what was left. But neither did I want the water running all night long until such a time as was decent enough to call someone.

Then genius (finally) hit. There was a tool kit in the office. So I drove down in my jammies to get it. Quality.

Why do these things always happen to me late at night?

Maundy Thursday

And I missed out on the little purse of money again. Although I suppose being in the country might help. Well that, and being an OAP.

So last night I went for a run around the lake. It’s been a while since I went the full way round and while it wasn’t as tragic as when I started the whole sorry affair, neither was it pretty. Then I worked it out. The last time I did it, I didn’t have my earrings weighing me down. And under instruction from Britney I cannot take out my earrings for another six and a half months. So I guess I’ll just have to get used to the extra weight. Maybe that was Paula’s problem in Athens, had she just got her ears pierced too?

But I was reminded that you should never think you’ve made it, because unless you keep it up, you’ll lose it.

In other news, I went to church last night. It was a thing called ‘The Living Last Supper’ where the Last Supper was dramatised with men from the church. They did it very well. And it was nice to see a drama in church that the cast did not rely solely (or at all) on members of the youth group.

Then, fresh from our reminder of what Easter is all about, Maggie and I went shopping. I’m not sure the Disciples did this after the actual Last Supper, late night opening probably wasn’t around in olden times. I got a bargainous pair of boots in the sale for $9, yes nine, as in seven, eight, nine dollars. $9 was too good to worry about the fact it’s 25 degrees outside and I don’t really need them now.

I’m off now for Good Friday and Easter Monday. Yay! Have a good Easter and try to see past all the Crème Eggs, same old Bank Holiday films and cutesy little bunnies to remember what it’s all about.

I love these!

I'm not a big fan of forwards, and I am grateful that there are just a few people who send me only the very best in forwarded emails and when you get a good one, my is it funny! These two made me laugh no end this week:

World's Bravest Man

Explaining to the ladies

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire.

Both of you have forgotten your purses. It would be totally rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.

She prepares to throw her purse to you. If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes. At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and, *whilst it is in flight* you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes.

Always remembering that until the purse had *actually been thrown* it would be plain wrong to be forward of the other shopper.

Congratulations, you now understand the offside rule.

What does that say about me that I find these two things funny?!

Things I plan to do tonight

  • Go for a walk in the glorious sunshine before making dinner (spaghetti bolognese)
  • Go through my finances in light of spending (probably too much) money at the weekend
  • Write letters to send tomorrow (maybe you will be one of the lucky few?! Your chances are greatly increased if you have written to me in the last month)
  • Mop the floor
  • Watch TV (7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls/American Idol, Teachers)
  • Definitely do not fall asleep infront of the TV (a la last night and Thurday night – seriously I am in the prime of my life!)
  • Go food shopping (need bananas, grapes, carrots, chicken, hot chocolate, yoghurts, waffles, and pasta)
  • Go to bed at a decent hour (see aforementioned sleeping in front of the TV)

All this should hopefully see that my ironing is avoided. I am the Queen of Skiving!

No GHDs allowed

Mullet avoided and I am not scarred by an incredibly short fringe (or bangs as they are called in the US) but I looked as southern as all get out leaving the hairdressers’. I walked in as Tina and left as Tina-Sue.

Hair straightening is something they don’t really practise here apparently. Every time I saw myself in the mirror I would chuckle out loud.

I took a shot of just the bottom of my hair, that was the most interesting part and also is a good advert for Autumn Soul!

Is it wrong that I actually kind of liked it?!

Krazy Kutz, Curl up and Dye and other witty hair salon names

It’s nearly the weekend already, my that went quick. Tomorrow I’m getting my hair cut. I don’t like new hairdressers, it takes me a while to trust them. My hairdresser at home is great, he knows that I am slightly scared of him cutting my hair and is always starts of slowly.

I wasn’t always like that. My last hairdresser scarred me, but not through some terrible accident with his scissors. He was cutting that grown out fringe bit and despite the fact he had cut my hair for at least seven years he whacked it off, leaving me with hardly even what you could call a fringe. It ended a good inch above my eyebrows*. I never went back to him, despite our long history together.

So I really didn’t want to have get my hair cut here, I thought I could manage until I was home in May but I have a torrent of split ends (the official collective noun for split ends) so I really can’t wait. But this time, in Hicksville, anything less than a mullet will count as a success.

* Photos of my like this sadly do still exist. It was the summer of ICYC in UUJ. So there are probably photos of me like this all around the world. Great.

Too tired to think of a title (but notice the alliteration!)

The parents have been safely despatched. Yesterday was a bit crazy with trying to say goodbye to everyone and get everything sorted before heading down to Greenville. Before they left, we all had dinner with Greenville people, actually it was just Greenville boys (I’m such a hussy!). It was a good night, with plenty of banter, of course much of it was slagging me, especially when it came to the night of the mouse. Boys!

G & V’s grandchildren are down staying. They picked me flowers which are now being proudly displayed on my desk. Bless their hearts.

PS Jud is great! I love Mini Eggs and Creme Eggs. She sent me some. Kari is also great! She me a giraffe. I love giraffes. Although it's still hard to beat the US Treasury's great post this week.

Tuesday

I am steadily collecting my points and soon will be ready to receive my ‘best daughter ever’ award.

In fact, David will have some work to do when they get home to beat me in my current position of number one child. Although my distance should help him, so I'm not hopeful that I'll stay there long. (I'm sure my parents would like me to point out they don't actually have favourites. David and I know different...it's Karen)

So yes, I have been ferrying the ‘rents all over the show. Yesterday we went into Asheville. Today was Waynesville. Tomorrow they leave from Greenville (all the 'villes then). Looking forward to them leaving, but only to get my house back to some sort of order you understand.

In other news, thanks to US Treasury for returning my taxes. Much obliged.

Weekend whatever number I'm up to

Obviously I spent the weekend with Mother and Father. On Saturday was showing them around where I live and work and all that. Then yesterday we went to the Biltmore again, so playing the tourists! It was absolutely gorgeous weather this weekend, from last weekend’s snow, all of a sudden it turned to summer. It was in the twenties here so the sunglasses and flip flops were on again and I can’t imagine it’ll not long before the summer skirts and shorts are out! I’d like to say bring it on, but I know I’ll be moaning about the heat soon enough so I’ll hang fire on that one.
